NCS to develop e-gov portal for Oman

Oman citizens will soon be enjoying more convenience government services via the Web or from their mobile phones when the new Ubar Portal is up and running.

The multi-million dollar project has been awarded by the Information Technology Authority (ITA) of Oman to NCS Pte Ltd to design, implement and maintain the portal over 5 years.

With the portal, Omani citizens can go online to access government information and services. They can do so either via the Web, or using mobile phones.

Mohammed Nasser Al-Khasibi, Secretary General in the Ministry of National Economy and chairman of ITA, says the Ubar Portal is one of the key initiatives under the Digital Oman programme.

“We are confident that NCS, with its tremendous history of ICT delivery for the Singapore government, has the technical competence to deliver a world-class portal infrastructure that will bring about the benefits of ICT to the citizens of Oman”.

“More importantly, through this strategic partnership, NCS Group will be sharing its experience and expertise with the ITA team in the areas of application development and e-Government to deliver new standards of ICT excellence to the people of Oman,” he adds.

Dr Chong Yoke Sin, CEO of NCS, says that the Ubar Portal is designed with users in mind, providing ease and convenience via customisable user interfaces, yet without compromising confidentiality and security.

With the new service delivery platform in place, Oman’s various government agencies will be able to develop and roll out more new e-services in a shorter time, cutting costs for the government while improving the services to citizens.

Oman, with its capital city Muscat, is on the south-east coast of the Arabian Peninsula, just outside the entrance to the Persian Gulf. A major oil producer, Oman is seeking to diversify its economy into other industries such as tourism and natural gas. The country’s Vision 2020 programme sets economic and social goals over the 25 years (1996-2020).
