Telesto Broadcast Solutions completes Major Studio Projects

Telesto is proud to announce that the past year has seen the company complete major radio studio projects in Thailand, India and Dubai.

2006 saw Telesto Broadcast Solutions consolidate its reputation as the premier company in Asia providing consultancy and integrations services to the radio broadcast industry.

Virgin Radio – Thailand

The completion of a major broadcast infrastructure development for Virgin Bec-Tero in Bangkok, Thailand, was a major milestone for the company, as the facility is considered to be the latest in Asia in terms of technological innovation as used in a radio facility.

The design met the client’s needs exactly with the broadcast centre comprising two floors with 2000m2 shared between offices and studios. The facility has been designed for 22 studios, of which 8 are dedicated selfoperated format on air studios and the remainder are used for production, news contribution, voice tracking and dubbing. There is enough capacity for 16 transmission paths and associated incoming and outgoing outside broadcast lines.

The flexible technical design was implemented by Telesto using Klotz Digital DCII audio mixers and the Klotz Digital Vadis integrated routing and control system which enables each studio to be customised to the current operational needs. The fault tolerant design uses five Vadis main frames for audio routing, talkback and control assignment to ensure total flexibility and is fully upgradeable.

HT Music and Entertainment – India

Telesto provided technical assistance in the planning, design and implementation of new FM radio stations for Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The client, a major media business in the Hindustan Times Group, are innovative leaders in the burgeoning new market for FM licensees in India and the station architectural, acoustic and technical design reflects this. Its channel, Fever 104, has a format that includes a mix of Hindi Bollywoood hits, Indipop and English music.

Telesto was required to provide a functional, practical and future-proof solution for the studios. The mixing console chosen was the Klotz Aeon in split configuration with routing and distribution via fibre utilising the Klotz Vadis router. The system is fully digital and uses Radio Computing Services software for scheduling and playout. Production is provided using DigiDesign ProTools workstations.

The three studio centres used a common design and the studio layouts were kept the same to minimise construction and design costs as well as facilitate the build.

Gulf News Broadcasting – UAE

In mid 2006 Ian Duddridge (Calypso Consulting) was contracted to provide technical services in the studio design, layout, equipment specifications as well as acoustic noise analysis and design specifications and management support for the main building architect. Tikendra Singh of coustic Research Lab provided the acoustic expertise and Telesto undertook the overall project management, installation and commissioning of the system. The work commenced in November 2006 and the station went live with two services in mid January 2007.

The project entailed building a broadcast studio centre for FM radio for 3 channels. This required the conversion of an existing warehouse type building. The studio complement was for 4 on air self-op studios, a talk studio, 2 production studios, 2 voice tracking booths and a master control room.

The system included the Klotz Aeon consoles and Klotz Vadis router with fibre interconnection. The design allows for multiple redundant routing and for the emergency studio to be assigned to any transmission channel in the event of a failure of hardware or software or for critical maintenance. The facility, although built to a strict budget, has the ability allow for expansion and the addition of extra features as required by the program staff in the future.

The technical build and commissioning were undertaken in a short time and the staff who were on air from an existing facility had to accommodate the change of location, environment, equipment and software in a very short time.

It was a credit to all involved that the changeover went so smoothly.
